Hi I am presently taking the ICS correspondence course. It seem to cover a great deal. My question to you is that how important is it to know all meanings to all medical terminology. Should I be concentrating on more is the spelling of the terms or the meaning. Please help. Confused

Hi Rita101! I think both are very important, I guess. There are many words that sound alike, but have different meanings so it is important to know something of anatomy and physiology, even if only a little bit. Examples are discrete and discreet, ilium and ileum, etc. The spellings are super important too, so I would rate them equal in importance just from my own experience. Good luck! Ada

I agree with Ada.. Both are very important. Lots of times you can get the meaning of what a doctor is saying even if he does not enunciate very clearly, if you know the difference in the meanings of the words.. and there are TONS of words that sound alike or so similar that the doctors pronounce them the same, like dysphagia and dysphasia. If you know the systems, etc., you will know which word they mean.

Hi

You must concentrate on spellings as it is very important for Medical Transcription. Some of the spellings are really confusing such as quarts, quartz or quiet, quite.
You must remember some of the following keypoints:
* Recognize common root words
* Break words down
* Pronounce and use terms with ease
* understand Greek and Latin sources of medical terms
* familiarize yourself with common terms used in the ER, OR, pharmacy, and lab
* Get a handle on anatomy and systems

You can refer a medical terminology book like Medical Terminology Ver. 2.0. You can buy this from http://www.free-ed.net/free-ed/healthcare/medterm-v02.asp

Hey Outsourcetransc:

I am not sure if you are aware, but you have been responding to some pretty old posts. This particular post was from 1999 (11 years ago). Just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Hi,

As per my opinion, both the things are equally important as far as medical transcription is concerned. If you start getting good command on both, then this will definitely be more advantageous for you.
