Hi Lily,

I had been using WordPerfect with PRD+ but when I changed to Word, my PRD+ kept locking up on me. Anyway, I now use PC Shorthand. Here's their website addy: PC Shorthand

It's very user friendly. I just click on the icon and it works in every program I use in windows, including e-mail, until I close it. If I want to add a word, phrase, or even a standard report, I just hit F10, type in the abbreviation I want to use, and then type what I want the abbreviation to expand.

I downloaded it directly from the website and they sent me the diskettes as well. I think it was about $25.00, well worth the time it saves me.

Hope this was helpful. Have a great week!

Hi Lily --

If you want to investigate other programs, here is a list, which includes information such as what platforms they work with and also links to their web sites where you can find more information.

(I also use Shorthand and like it very much, but I am somewhat restricted by the transcription program I use)

Hi Lily,
I use Smartype and love it. I know there are other word expanders out there but when I found Smartype, I knew it was for me. Hope you find what you are looking for.

I down loaded the Shorthand and I doesn't work when I have it in the background. I added a few entries, now it won't do it anymore.

Help.

Bring up the Shorthand window, go to Shortcuts, Edit, and click on Autoreplace. Make sure the first box is checked.

I think you also have to turn OFF Autocorrect in Word.

I think that this is actually in the Help files that come with the program under Frequently Asked Questions. If you have a printer, you might want to print out the Helps so that you can refer to them as you go.

I have been using Instant Text with both MS Word 7.0 and MS Word 2002 on Win '98 and XP Pro respectively.

I have been thrilled with IT. It has a visual glossary so as you type you have choices. It also anticipates what you are going to type and throws choices at you before you type them based on what the previous typed phrases/words were that you typed. You can also compile personal glossaries using the files that you type daily for your doctors and it complies multiple phrases that they use over and over.

And if that is not all -- it is a counter for you -- comes up with character count, line count and total price per document. You can also invoice with it.

I give IT a 3-thumbs up. laugh

I use SmarType mainly for the added ability to create macros in addition to regular expanded abbreviations, which goes, IMO, way beyond what regular expanders can do. I understand Instant Text may have that capability also, but I've never used it so I can't say for sure. When you can create your own macros, you can do so much more than just expand text. You can program it to do things like automatically copy preop diagnoses into postop diagnoses (as they are often the same), automatically copy and place header information on subsequent pages, etc. I love it, it's a great timesaver, thus, a moneymaker!
