I am trying to locate a transcriber with telephone recording jack. I am starting an at home transcription business in Springfield, Georgia and cannot locate a transcriber with the telephone jack. If anyone has any suggestions of name brands that I can try to find I will greatly appreciate this. Also I need any advice on how to charge per word (my program does a word count not line counts).

Welcome to The Gab! I wonder if you would be kind enough to do a search of the BB first because there have been some messages about transcribing equipment posted already. If you don't think any of the info helps you, re-post and I will try to give you a better answer.

To search, just find the word "search" in the top right of your screen, click on it and then follow the instructions - it's really easy and if you look for words like "transcribe" or "equipment" you should find most if not all messages regarding equipment.

Here is my reply from a similar message:

"I would consider 65 characters as one line. If you want, you could check out Sylvan's site (the makes of Sylcount) at:

http://www.sylvansoft.com/

Their line counting programmes run upwards of US$75.00. Can't your word-processor count lines for you? What software are you using to do your work? Both MS Word and WordPerfect have line counting capabilities, as you might know."

SOMara...was it you that mentioned the Philips transcribing machine...that you liked them so well...in the other room? If so, where can I get one? I have searched for any Philips model and come up empty. Thanks.

I don't believe Philips is even making those transcribers anymore - at least I have not been able to find any new ones. Maybe another division is selling them. All our Philips models were bought used from a dealer who sells Philips computerized systems. I think you may be able to find some where they sell used business equipment. I don't know what country you are from so I'm not really sure if that kind of business exists where you live.

I have more questions on transcribers. I know I want more than one speed. Is two sufficient...should it be 3? And what are the different channels they are talking about? Do I NEED a 2 channel?

Homeschoolmom and SOMara:
Thanks for your replies. The information is helpful. I browsed the bb and found several people who are selling equipment. Have not contacted anyone yet. I also checked into Martelsales@worldnet.att.net. They have a call in system that can accomodate 1-4 doctors. They say the price is $495.oo complete we shall see. Will let you know what I find out, am going to fax them a note to see what they say. Love this MT gab. It is very informative. I have been transribing for about 16 years now at the local hospital in Springfield, GA and really want to stay at home with my 8 year old daughter this summer. Hopefully I can have my business up and running by then. Will save a lot on "day care". More infor later when I hear back from Martel.
