So, i am 28, and recently finished a 1 yr certificate in a medical admin. specialist program. I had a lot of practice on transcribing and medical terminology in this class. I know most companies want someone with much more experience, but I have been offered a position that pays really well through a temp agency. I am also exceptional with my accuracy, punctuation and grammar skills.

My only problem is that I've never worked with transcription equipment, aside from headphones, never a foot pedal. It is a full time job IN office and my main concern is that I have a very bad back. I am actually looking at a fusion. I worry that i wont be able to take this job. I am determined and very motivated for this job, but I'm nervous i wont be able to keep it. Is there any advice you can give me that will help ease an 8 hr day of transcribing? I think my only break is lunch. Do normal transcription positions have you do anything else, such as phones and are you aloud to take stretching breaks?

Sounds like you have a great opportunity to get some experience, which is very rare for newbies.

How did you transcribe in your class without a foot pedal? That must have been difficult. In any case, it should not take you long to catch on. Have them explain it to you.

Perhaps if you can take frequent breaks (say 5 minutes every hour you will be able to work the whole shift. I've never had a back problem so I can't exactly relate to your problem, but it sounds serious to me if surgery is being considered.

If you take the job you should definitely have an ergonomic evaluation to make sure every issue is addressed to maximize your comfort. I would recommend something to support your arms so you won't be using your shoulders to hold them up for 8 hours--that will ultimately affect your back.
