I have a doc who says "in lieu of" when he means "in light of." When I first heard it I thought there was a meaning I didn't know about, so I looked it up and there wasn't. I've been changing it for 5+ years and have never had him or anyone in the office say anything.
By the way, I say "fixing to" all of the time! My English teacher in high school used to ask me what was broken! (I am a long-transplanted Southerner to Maine). I wouldn't get mad if I said it and someone changed it on me!
