Hi!
I have been a medical transcriptionist for 11 years, the past four years as a contractor. I have done everything solely by microcassette tapes. I work for several doctors and this means running around town every single day. I need to find out more about a digital system. I am completely in the dark here...please enlighten me! I subcontract to several other transcriptionists so I need something that multiple users can access remotely.

I would appreciate any help. I am finding myself running more and typing less, just a little counterproductive.

Thanks!!!

Hi,

I don't know a lot because I do the same as you (run around picking up tapes), but I have a friend who bought a digital hand-held recorder and is experimenting with it. The doctor dictates into it (not tied to the phone, which is a plus for those docs used to hand-helds), then plugs it into a PC where the info is uploaded to a secure site, which can then be downloaded by you to your PC, at which time you can use a WAV player (software and equipment that turns your PC into a transcriber) to transcribe it.

If you click the "equipment" hyperlink at the top of this page and then look under "recorders" and then "digital" you can find out more info on it.

Unfortunately, I know just enough to be dangerous, but there are people on this board who are more experienced than I am with this!

Hello!
There are so many options for digital dictation and transcription it is scary! eek
One option is using digital recorders. That way the doctors can send you the files via the internet. Just make sure they have a software that can encrypt those files so they are HIPAA compliant. Now everyone needs to get that into effect!
Another option is using a call in system. Basically your doctors would call into a system and then those dictations can be sent to you via Email or to an FTP site which is basically storage space on the internet.
One final and somewhat pricy option is purchasing a small dictation server such as DVI, Lanier, or Dictaphone to name a few. We use a DVI system here for our ASP Call in system Idigital and it works very well.
Those are your main options. Hopefully it will help you out! Plus I am sure there are others actually using this equipment that have user experience. That always helps! Have a great day!
