At my current job (not as an MT because I haven't finished my course yet but I do work in a medical office) I feel like my boss harrasses me. I feel that way because of many things she does to me, most recently she made fun of the way i type (with out looking at the keyboard. How dumb is that?) to my co-workers. Not that that is so big of a deal, it was just the straw that broke the camels back. I'm so sick of it that I'm concidering getting a little throw away job until I finish MT school.
So I was just wondering what sorts of things I should get myself ready for in the MT field so that I can get some thicker skin in that regard. I hope so much that it's better than this.

Your boss was out of line, no question. Hopefully your coworkers understood what an insensitive and irrelevant remark she made--she's the one who looked foolish, certainly not you.

Most bosses are not like this--if you get a job working at home you won't hear anything like that since no one knows how you keyboard. However, you will have to get used to taking CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Some people are good at that; others are not. Some people are good at giving constructive criticism; others are not. Hopefully you won't have someone who does not properly convey constructive criticism. However, you are going to be called on a lot of things when you first start (even experienced MTs face criticism because they might do things differently from what is done at a new job, the company doesn't follow commonly recognized style guides, or even the experienced MT has been doing something incorrectly for years).

The majority of bosses are not like yours, and I hope you get someone who has the heart of a teacher and has the ability to correct people the way he/she would want to be corrected.

Well the thing that bothers me about my boss is that she complains about me behind my back (again today because she doesn't like the way I make copies). If someone doesn't like the way I do things I want them to tell me. I appreciate the heads up about a lot of constructive criticism though. Even though I like to receive constructive criticism it's good to know I should expect a lot of it. That way I know it's not like I am horrible as a MT but that it's something everyone goes through while getting settled in at a new job.

Your boss has no tact and it appears no supervisory abilities. If she doesn't like how you do something it is up to her to tell you how she would like it done, not talk about you behind your back.

MTs definitely have to learn to have a thick skin--as I said, even experienced MTs are going to have to "relearn" some things in a new job and refrain from saying "at my old job we did it this way."

I worked at a hospital where the Book of Style was not followed until I had been there for 2 years. In the meantime I had to keep quiet and do it their way unless I thought it would compromise the accuracy of the document.

There are supervisors who remember what it was like to be supervised and treat people the way they would want to be treated. Obviously your boss is not one of them.
