Hello everyone. I would like to set up a simple digital transcription system and hope someone here can advise. This is basically my situation. I will be transcribing for one physician only. I would prefer not to spend a lot of money on start up costs for elaborate programs or equipment. The Doc will basically be dictating into either a handheld digital recorder or possibly a computer dictation mic (he'd prefer not to have to deal with files/folders/multiple steps to dowload, etc). He would prefer to just dictate for the full day and then send the files all at once to keep things simple. I don't want to have to deal with FTP's or interent based servers, etc. Is there just a simple, inexpensive solution for this that someone could suggest with actual equipement names and programs. Thank you!

Hi Preston,

If you look at the top of this page you will see a link named Digital Transcription Info--that will help you a lot.

If you have any other questions after that, ask away. I'm not the best person to answer, because I know just enough to be dangerous. My docs refuse to go digital!

KKB, thanks for your prompt reply. That was a good article.....but I was wondering if anyone wouldn't mind sharing their favorite brands/kits/software, etc. I saw a kit on another website that included the Olympus DS-330 and an Olympus RS23 foot pedal with software for a great price. Has anyone had any experience with this specific model? Also, a fav. e-mail encryptor. Thanks for any info.

Hi Preston,

I think the Olympus DS-330 is a very popular model. Make sure the one you get has a docking station so that you can upload the dictation into the computer.

As far as encryptors, I use one because I have a newbie who e-mails her work after she's finished. There are several free encryption programs. The one I used I got on www.aamtonline.org and it's called FineCrypt. There are also encryption programs on this website you can purchase. Also check out www.transcriptiongear.com and www.sylvansoft.com for other programs.

There is also a free program called Express Scribe for transcribing--here's that link:

http://www.nch.com.au/scr ibe/

The doc has to pay for his part of that program.

Most people use wav pedals, I do know that, but there are other programs called Start Stop, and others.

As you can see, I know just enough to be dangerous. Hopefully a more knowledgeable person will be able to help you more!

Thanks for your reply. I think with the article on here, a little further research, and some of your suggestions, I feel I have a solution figured out.

Hi

There are a lot of digital voice recorders now available, notable amongst them are the Olympus WS300M, Olympus DS-30, Olympus WS-311M, Sony ICD-SX57, Sony ICD-U60, Olympus WS-100, many of these are used by busy businessmen for recording notes or minutes of board meetings.
You can take help of some digital transcription software like Express Scribe Transcription Playback Software.
