Hi and Welcome,

I did the same thing when I started out. I had one of those small flip notebooks and each page was a letter. As I found something I didn't know (no internet in those days, neither my boss or I knew much about medical word books) I would put it under the proper letter. I still have it! My aunt, who also used to be an MT, had one also.

Nowadays I add it to my expander--I can go right to the section which that letter starts with, or if it's a word that starts with a ph instead of an f, I can spell it with an f and it will correctly put in the word starting with a ph.

^^ No internet? I can't imagine life without it. I'm young, so haven't known anything but having the net as a great resource since starting MT about 5 years ago. A few links I occasionally use as a resource and/or bookmarked to help others out with are:

Online dictionary (for common non-medical words I'm not always familiar with or make sure are used in the correct context) http://dict.die.net/

Med dictionary(I haven't used this one for some time, but it's in my bookmarks, so I'm posting it here in case it helps anyone else out) http://www.medterms.com/s cript/main/hp.asp

Dorlands Medical Dictionary - just simply the best one http://www.mercksource.co m/pp/us/cns/cn...-a-b-000zPz htm

ICD codes http://www.icd9coding1.co m/flashcode/home.jsp

Abbv's(small list for newbie's) http://www.medicinenet.co m/script/main/art.asp?art iclekey=54842&page=3

MT Desk (haven't used this one for some time, but have in the past when "stuck"
http://www.mtdesk.com/fra me.php?frame=glossary

To anyone reading, hope perhaps these links help if you're stuck

Hello All,

New to the board, and new to the job (I Love it!). I have not yet used expanders, but instead of a notebook I have set myself up several Works Databases. Best thing is setting up several cross-reference columns within each database. I can add new words at the end and then Re-alphabetize with two mouse clicks. Can also search the entire database for any word, part of a word, or phrase. A new term for me, which I couldn't find on my own, was "paraspinous muscles". Could not understand that dictator. Now I put it in my Terms Database. In the "What Is It" column, I typed "neck muscles". In the "Might Sound Like" column I typed "paris feenus muscles". That's what it sounded like to me. Learning new word and phrases every day!

This seems like a very friendly board - hope to visit frequently.

IMO, this board seems dead frown (or at least not as frequented as other online forums I'm used to, then again, it took me a month until I replied and checked up here) Very friendly crowd indeed.

My figuring now is if I had to look up/search for the correct spelling, capitalization or just wasn't sure about the meaning on a particular word the first time around, there may be another MT out there who will benefit from my mini lists.

The forums will not allow me to update the first post, so here's a copy of my latest list:
